John Legend Writes to NY Post.

We have all seen that sketch in the New York Post and most of us have been outraged by it. John Legend included. Read his letter below:

I’m trying to understand what possible motivation you may have had for publishing that vile cartoon depicting the shooting of the chimpanzee that went crazy. I guess you thought it would be funny to suggest that whomever was responsible for writing the Economic Recovery legislation must have the intelligence and judgment of a deranged, violent chimpanzee, and should be shot to protect the larger community. Really? Did it occur to you that this suggestion would imply a connection between President Barack Obama and the deranged chimpanzee? Did it occur to you that our President has been receiving death threats since early in his candidacy? Did it occur to you that blacks have historically been compared to various apes as a way of racist insult and mockery? Did you intend to invoke these painful themes when you printed the cartoon?

If that’s not what you intended, then it was stupid and willfully ignorant of you not to connect these easily connectable dots. If it is what you intended, then you obviously wanted to be grossly provocative, racist and offensive to the sensibilities of most reasonable Americans. Either way, you should not have printed this cartoon, and the fact that you did is truly reprehensible. I can’t imagine what possible justification you have for this. I’ve read your lame statement in response to the outrage you provoked. Shame on you for dodging the real issue and then using the letter as an opportunity to attack Rev. Sharpton. This is not about Rev. Sharpton. It’s about the cartoon being blatantly racist and offensive.

I believe in freedom of speech, and you have every right to print what you want. But freedom of speech still comes with responsibilities and consequences. You are responsible for printing this cartoon, and I hope you experience some real consequences for it. I’m personally boycotting your paper and won’t do any interviews with any of your reporters, and I encourage all of my colleagues in the entertainment business to do so as well. I implore your advertisers to seriously reconsider their business relationships with you as well.

You should print an apology in your paper acknowledging that this cartoon was ignorant, offensive and racist and should not have been printed.

I’m well aware of our country’s history of racism and violence, but I truly believe we are better than this filth. As we attempt to rise above our difficult past and look toward a better future, we don’t need the New York Post to resurrect the images of Jim Crow to deride the new administration and put black folks in our place. Please feel free to criticize and honestly evaluate our new President, but do so without the incendiary images and rhetoric.

Essence Music Festival 2009.

The 15th Anniversary of the Essence Music Festival will be celebrated this summer in New Orleans. The event will take place July 3rd- July 5th. Each night, there will be amazing performances from several talented performers. This year's lineup includes MAXWELL, Eric Benet, Jazmine Sullivan, Janelle Monae, Raphael Saadiq, Zap Mama, Lalah Hathaway, Ledisi, John Legend, Solange, and more. Video: John Legend- Everybody Knows.

Well, the wait is finally over. The video for John Legend's second single "Everybody Knows" (from his third LP Evolver) is finally here. Although it isn't one of my favorites from the album, it's a nice song and a nice choice for a single. In the video, John paces the streets of New York and you see short scenes of different couples' relationships and...well, watch for yourself.


And looking back at the review I had written, I see that it was a little harsh. The album has grown on me..but it's still not a Get Lifted.

Inauguration Performances.

Many, many, many artists are getting together and performing in celebration of Barack Obama's inauguration. Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial on January 18th includes performances by artists such as John Legend, Stevie Wonder, Heather Headley, Mary J. Blige, Beyonce, and more. The show will be broadcasted LIVE on HBO at 2:30 PM (EST). The Encore will air at 7PM. Also on the 18th, there will be an inaugural ball, Dreams From My Father American Scholars Inaugural Ball, in D.C. at the Four Seasons. Expect performances by Alicia Keys and more. (More info here).

Things are a bit confusing at the moment. There may be more than one ball going on?

Not too much has been going on lately. Maybe this is the calm before the storm...something major is going to come up soon. Watch.

Review: John Legend- Evolver.

Well, well, well, the agonizing wait for Evolver is finally over. As you all know, the album leaked a couple of weeks ago but I did not listen to it. As bad as I wanted to, I didn't. I've heard a lot of good things about it, but at the same time, I've heard a lot of bad things. I've been so anxious to hear it and I was pretty sure that it would be one of my top three albums of the year.


Boy was I wrong.


Okay, the album is not horrible, but it's definitely not a Get Lifted. I understand that he was trying to do something a little different for this album, but I wish he didn't. There's something I have against John's voice over a produced track and many of the tracks are produced, but a couple of my favorites are "No Other Love," and "Quickly."

Even though Mr. Legend tried to switch things up for us, you see that he couldn't shy away from his Once Again and Get Lifted days. "I Love, You Love"* is a prime example of that. His voice on that track is just fantastic and it is definitely getting the most plays out of all the other tracks right now. Also, "This Time,"* and "If You're Out There" are other examples. I don't know about you, but I would have liked to hear more songs like that on the album. If that was the case, Evolver would have been battling with Get Lifted for the title of my favorite John Legend album.


Overall, the album is very unpredictable and unexpected, and he is clearly "evolving" into something different. If you like change, this album is for you. If you don't...well, you're in for a surprise.

*sigh* John Legend's Evolver has leaked. I've been waiting to hear this album for the longest, but I will not, I repeat, I will NOT download it. I am a huge fan of John and I want to purchase this album from the store.

I'm Doing Some "Construction" On Here...

Just playing around with photoshop and such, so this page might change a lot. Anyway, I'm trying to get some albums uploaded, but it has come to my attention that I'm neglecting the males. I have a lot of females on here, and a lot more to post, but I want to give the males some attention too.

Well, here's a little bit of news. Solange premieres her "Sandcastle Disco" on FNMTV tomorrow night. I've seen the preview and it looks good. Her album is in stores August 26th. John Legend premieres his "Green Light" video on FNMTV on August 22nd. Mary J. Blige and Robin Thicke are going on tour, the first few dates are September 19th at the Verizon Wireless Ampitheater in Virginia Beach, VA, Nissan Pavilion in Virginia, and at Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion, NC on the 21st(thanks to http://www.ultimatemjb.com/).
