Randomness....
This is more like a rant, I don't do these too often.
So, as I was on SoulBounce, I came across a post entitled Raheem DeVaughn + T-Pain = EPIC FAIL. I thought to myself, I KNOW they didn't do a song together...please.... Well, they did. Why? All I can ask is why? Okay, first of all, Raheem DeVaughn is not a mainstream artist and he probably never will be (that's not a bad thing). Why would you make a track with the most mainstream artist out there? What does that say?
I'm not dissin' him, I love Raheem and I'm a fan of his and I applaud him for attempting a track like this. But, um, just tell me that this isn't going to be on an album. I'll lose my mind. Oh, and did he just say "My Air Max is black, my President is black?" Jesus, take the wheel. Musiq, I apologize for being so hard on "Radio." That's nothing compared to this.
With that being said, here are three rules that artists should abide by:
1. Don't do a track with T-Pain. That's just a no.
2. Don't try to switch from Neo-Soul/Soul to Mainstream. It's not you. You have plenty of fans who appreciate you and the music you are currently creating. Why would you want to change that? Why would you want to gain new fans who love you for someone you're really not?
3. If you're good at it, stick with it. Changing your style up a little bit is good, but don't get carried away. This, guys, would be getting carried away.
In other news, things are still pretty slow at the moment which would explain the lack of posts. We're still here!

Musiq is on that track too...I say that to say that. These guys however B list, still strive to be A-list. Only one that's truly comfortable in his own skin is Erro.

NO, NO, NO, NO!!
Raheem DeVaughn's debut album was amazing, why do amazing artists have to work with commercial machines like T-Pain. Urgh!
If he wanted to change his style a little, he should've took a leaf out of other artists book that have changed slightly but haven't compromised everything that their music stands for. It's a shame that T-Pain was allowed to water down Raheem's talent, because he certainly doesn't need a producer like that on his work. He has everything going for him wihtout any of that.
so true! I can't stand when they get envy in their eyes and stray away from their true gift!
I think you made a great point. I wish all soul artists would stay true to themselves but unfortunately money talks and everything else walks (dignity & authenticity included). I'm disappointed too because contrary to popular belief, T-Pain is not the king of R&B he's just a royal pain in the...you know what!!BTW, this blog is awesome! All the best to Brown Sugar ;)
Raheem has 2 joints with T-pain....
Im not mad at the Reality Show joint but the Club Hop joint is not hitting although Rah's lyrics was somewhat about his new found mainstrean success from 2007 -08/, and it sounds like Rah was on the vocoder at the end...WTF
T-Pain did a track with both Raheem and Musiq. It's called "Reality Show" It's alright. It's for T-Pain's album so they've all used the vodocoder. But, for Raheem or Musiq to use it for their own albums would be disappointing. Although, I don't mind if they do it in a collaboration with T-Pain as a one time thing for their album. JHud and Chris Brown did that, but they still stuck to what they originally are for the rest of their albums. JHud's album btw, is boring.
Here are my rules:
1. Never call T-Pain an artist. Unless you add the word "con" in front of it.
2. Crossover is possible. It requires a powerful tool called "charisma". Changing your sound won't work and should never be tried.
3. Peer pressure = Epic Fail. A desire to get spins or to apease ur label will always result in bullsh*t moves. And even though it was there idea, you'll be blamed when it doesn't work. Tell them to 'No' and keep touring. You'll get your checks and they spend the downtime figuring how to get theirs, without ruining your career.
